The Importance of setting Goals and How

By Carl on June 1, 2007

I had a chatmate on gmail a month ago who was asking for some advice on his new blog. Of course, I answered yes and asked him a question: “What are the goals in this new blog? What shocked me is that he just laughed and answered me with we “nothing

LOL, who needs Goals?!

Why are goals important then? Just pause for a moment, and think about your childhood. Remember those days that you used to say “I want to be a doctor when I grow up mommy, or maybe a race car driver, or, or… We used to have tons of dreams and goals when we were a child because we always think that everything can be done. But when we reach puberty, we usually think that it’s hard and there’s no way we can achieve it. The reason you lost that faith is because you didn’t set a goal.

Just like in blogging or an online business. If you set goals, more likely you’ll be successful because you follow a direction. Goals are like maps for race car drivers. It helps them got to some place they like, like the finish line.

So go on! Set some blog goals! Try to write what your heart desires and what you think you want. Set no limits like a child ;)

How do I set the “Perfect Goal?

  • Be Specific as possible – If you set an exact goal, you put in numbers, you put in names, you put in time. You will know what “exactlyâ€? to do and when to do it. This will help you do goals much easier.
  • Numberize your Goals – Numberizing (Is there such word?!) your goals will help you do goals step by step so you don’t get too overpowered when you have loads to do.
  • Write it! – I always write my goals and maybe put a little square before it. It helps me remember things that I have to do and what I have done.
  • Reward yourself – After accomplishing goals, try to reward yourself. Maybe a day without blogging or work ;)

Don’t set goals that are too low

Most people have goals, but a big chunk of those set their goals too low. They set goals too low because they lack faith with their self “Oh no… I can’t optimize these, that, it’s too hard. Or they’re afraid, afraid of failure.

Don’t be afraid! All people fail but to be successful you should learn in those failures.

Take Action!

Oh, come on! Go get a pencil and write this on a piece of paper:

What I have now: Write things that you have achieved now. It maybe your RSS feed subscribers, or search engine ranking, etc…

What I want: It can be to triple that feed subscribers or maybe a higher search engine ranking…

Read your goals every now and then and do a checklist of what goals have you achieved and have not. Remember to always try your best to achieve those. Goals that are written are still useless without action.

Anyway, can I have bit of your goals? Share your thoughts with me and leave a comment ;)

I always try to write the goals. But most of it are not of a daily basis. For example, i want to increase adsense by 20%, or increase subs by 100. These are mostly month-end goals.

As an added tip, try to compare your previous months earnings and metrics to see if you are really moving along well enough and then make adjustments to keep you on the right track.

Hope this helps!
