It’s been a while since I last did this huge list thing, hope I still got the Kidblogger in me. I’m getting old!

But this was rather late to say the least. I was supposed to post this the other week but got loads of stuff got in the way. Still, I’m quite happy to finish writing this BIG article so I hope you like it.

ALERT! Disclaimers below…

First disclaimer, some ideas just happen to pop out my head so you might find them a bit “rad”.

Second disclaimer, some tactics are so bad ass and effective, people “just happen” to not like them ;-)

Third disclaimer, I’m not gonna talk about submitting to web directories, press releases and all those rehashed stuff. I’m not saying that they don’t work, I’m saying that it has talked about a lot of times before.

Other than that, I’m pretty sure you’ll like it…

Do The Link Bait

To bloggers, this is a household name. To others, it might sound weird. So…

What the heck is link baiting anyway?

Tons of people tried to explain link baiting in long articles that go on and on. I’ll be frank, I can’t read long articles that don’t talk about big trucks, some mighty cool weird facts and chicks.

So let’s keep it simple – link baiting is simply “something” (article, tool, picture, anything) that make people want to link to you.

Here are some goodies you can do…

1. Make a list – No need to explain, examples will tell ya: 50 most important people on the web, 100 best movie lines, 69 ways to build backlinks ;-)

2. Perform studies – There’s a stats junkie inside of almost every people – wanting to know every new website linking to you, conversion rates of certain colors, how people look at a webpage and all sorts of stuff. But hey, it’s solid content and damn interesting.

3. Make graphs that are hard to understand – Just something that might help you with #2 up there. Can’t help myself to include this. OCD? Nah… complicated = good (at some point). Ok seriously though, when you perform studies, presentation matters. Churn out spiffy graphs that’ll help you explain what you found out.

4. Expose a scammer - Works all the time. Heck, anything with the word “expose” in it will be a link magnet! (hint: controversy) But be careful, you have to back up yourself on this one. You need SOLID proof.

5. Quizzes and tests - “Mark completed the quiz ‘Are You Awesome?’ with the result AWESOME!.” Sounds familiar? Yep, Facebook! And it’s popping every minute! Why do you think the IQ test industry is so big?

6. Show off - $100,000 Adsense check, $40,000/month via blogging – what do they have in common? They Flaunt, they show off BUT how do they get away with it? (this one is stolen from NLP) They portray the “reluctant hero” story line – “I’m just an ordinary guy, I don’t want this attention, but people keep asking me so…”

Try Google’s Web 2.0 Favorites

The idea is simple, you make these “midget blogs”, slap an article on it with a link back to your site, publish it and forget about it.

You can do this by using your own domain, hosting them in different IP’s and stuff BUT that would need some upfront cash. So instead of buying hundreds of domains and paying a monthly bill on hosting, you can slap those articles on these free “midget blog” sites.

7. Squidoo – Probably my favorite of all the “midget blogs” available. Totally far-out drag and drop modules, not so strict moderators, solid backlinks and a chance to get some quality traffic too. Hey, it’s Seth Godin!

8. Hubpages - Cool site and sweet community. You might need a better article though because before they do-follow your links, they’ll look at your article first and they’ll decide if it’s worth do-following your links.

9. Blogger – My second favorite. Again, drag and drop stuff, no strick moderators and solid backlinks. Almost zero traffic though.

10. Bloggersbase - This one is pretty sweet. They understand that you’re there for promoting your own blog so it’s ok for them to put an author info at the end of your article.

11. Ever - Weirdest.Photo.Ever.com, Sexiest.Blonde.Ever.com, Best.Guns.Ever.com – cool sister site of Squidoo.com. The idea is simple, when you get to the site they have a drop down of adjectives you can choose from – that’ll be the first word in your domain and the second or third is up to you.

12. Webs – Please bear with me though if I cry while typing stuff about Webs (formely FreeWebs, it’s just that this is one of the site I was used to when I first started, it’s so memorable to me *cry cry* :-)

OK, seriously, I like the easy interface. They do post a wide AdSense ad on top of the page though, but other than that, you’ll like it.

13. Devhub - Here’s a new player in the field, one account, tons of sites, referral program and automatic monitization + cash out at $5, so you make money while building links too, sweet!

14. Tumblr - Tumblr blogs are for vanity and just for pure social networking so when you post stuff here, appear natural. Write like you’re talking to your close friend. You might want to add some nonesense pictures too, BIG ++ in appearing natural ;-)

15. Xanga – My dad used to use this waay back when I was 10, posting pictures and stuff – multiply-ish type of site.

I haven’t tried the 6 “midget blog” sites below personally…

16. Webjam – Create your own social networking site kind of thing, looks promising.

17. Weebly – Drag and drop stuff, no advertising and lots of templates.

18. ZoomBlog – Integrates with Flickr, Bloglines and Technorati

19. Wikidot – Another cool wiki site.

20. Nexo – Another multiply-ish type of site, kinda hard to get it because it has the “For family and friends” site feeling.

21. Rateitall - This one’s pretty unique – you can make a post and let others rate it OR you can be the one who rates stuff. They’ve also filled the site with tons of quizes.

(WARNING – powerful hint: interlinking.)

Social Bookmarking

22. Digg – Weird stuff, odd pictures and tech – that makes it my favorite social bookmarking site :-) OK, aside from being my favorite, Digg has a very slick interface.

23. Slashdot – “News for nerds. Stuff that matters.” Very very strict moderators. Mainly because, the site is PR 9 since way back then. So I suggest post “real” cool stuff that the slashdot community would be interested in.

24. Spurl - Very simple, clean interface, lesser ads, I like it.

25. Plime – From the looks of it, it’s a heavily customized Pligg, splashed with weird but attractive colors – brith of Plime!

26. Dotnetkicks – This one only allows system stuff (ASP, C#, C++, XML, etc) Another site that looks to be built upon Pligg.

27. Searchles – Has a wide category for the internet marketing niche, voting is from 1-5 stars (or circles)

28. Bibsonomy - Another very clean and simple social site.

29. Tweako – One of the social sites I was able to see the actual growth, literally almost the start. I was able to talk to the founder, awesome dude.

30. Yattle – Social bookmarking site with a mini-blogging service

Don’t Be Shy – Upload Videos

If you can’t stop talking, better grab a camera and record it, another easy way to get a backlink.

For camera shy’s out there, you can always make use of camtasia or powerpoint, way easier. It doesn’t have to be totally cool, it just have to be good enough to get accepted on these sites (and of course, to show to the public :-D):

31. Dailymotion – Just upload any of your own video and get a link in the profile page – that easy.

32. Videojug – A video site full of how to videos. I’m pretty sure the videos are moderated, but heck, I bet it’s easy to get in.

33. Viddler - Slick interfae, and unlike the two above, you get a link on EACH video you submit!

Giveaway YOUR Docs

After slapping your articles on those “midget blog” sites, you can submit it as documents on these sites and still get away with a link. You can also submit a free report you already have, no duplicate content issue.

34. Scribd – The pioneer in the document-submitting industry :-D

35. Issuu – Sleek interface with voting system.

36. Docstoc – Pretty promising with referral reward system.

Make Use Of Torrents

Same idea as submitting your report or articles, but this time you give them away via Torrent. You get a link on the torrent search engine’s description area.

37. Fenopy

Ordinary Persons Too Have A Voice – Petition

Make a petition related to the niche you are in and introduce yourself with a link to your blog, that easy:

38. ipetitions

39. Gopetitions

40. Petitionthem

Social Networking Profiles

I’m pretty sure there’s a lot of social networking profiles out there that doesn’t have the no-follow tag in the links on your profiles, but these are some quick finds:

41. Friendster – Friendster has been on the platue recently probably due to the tons of bugs the site have, still worth creating a profile there though.

42. Gather – Social networking site where you can create a blog that links to your site ;-)

Flattery

Most of these stuff take advantage of human nature, it’s almost as close as pointing a gun at their head asking them to link to your site, OK not really but these stuff works pretty good.

43. Rank and rate them – Definitely “tickles” human nature. Rank people in your niche using any weird ranking factors, but works best with trusted 3rd party sources. Check out the top 100 make money online blogs and the Youngest Bloggers (WARNING: Self promotion, self promotion!)

44. Interviews – Wow, very old, very saturated tactic that STILL works. Heck, I bet it will always do – it’s a win-win. The interviewer gets good content, the interviewee LINK gets good exposure.

45. Awards – Another human nature tickler. Simple idea really – you award people in your niche for something. For example, the most absurd blogging blog (OK, that’s not a good example, heh), the blog design, the best writing style. Then, give out a plaque, or in the online world, a badge or a small spiffy graphic to post on their blog.

Use One Of The Most Potent Weapons Of Influence – Reciprocity

GASP! Human nature stuff here again.

Has someone ever helped you and asked for nothing in return? Then when he needs something, whatever it is, you feel obliged to help? That’s human nature talking to you.

You feel obliged to reciprocate. So that is what we’re going to take advantage here, we’ll make them feel obliged to link to us.

Even the Godfather uses this “persuasion” tactic.

46. Testimonials – A very saturated tactic here too that still works. Can get you a link from a very authoritative site and has a big chance to drive you loads of traffic.

47. Sponsor, donate – There are some blogs there that has an Amazon Wishlist or a “buy me a drink” donating buttons. Most of lists down all the people who have donated in some way. Maybe via blogroll or via a post, permanent link right there.

Fresh and funky

48. Interview someone on twitter - not a lot of people has done it, so you might even get top bloggers to link to you.

49. Give t-shirts – Dude, who doesn’t love free t-shirts?

50. Ask for the link – “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.” – Matthew 7:7

Money doesn’t come to you, you come and get it (although in some cases, after you’ve made lots of it, they happen to come to you) it’s the same for backlinks, you come and get it – email bloggers that you’ve made an awesome post (hint!) that’s worth sharing to their readers. Of course, you wouldn’t want to do this for each of your post.

51. Yedda – It’s like Yahoo Answers, but it’s do-follow B-)

52. The new article marketing - The new article marketing just got more badass. Now, it gives you a heavy link juice concentrate and damn fine targeted traffic. Checkout the new article marketing.

53. Zug – Tell a joke, get a link. Simple. Rad.

54. Throw a contest - This got a bit saturated in the “make money” market because of the massive links contest hosts get before, but still works. Tip: to make this work, make it a lot easier for people to join. For example, twittering, copy pasting a small blurb of text to their blog, Stumbling the post, etc.

55. Hotscripts - You a programmer dude? Make a simple script and give it away. You’ll get a link back from the BIG hotscripts directory PLUS, you can request a link back from the people who will use your script.

56. Firefox extension – Ok, if you’re not a programmer, it’s worth hiring one just for this. addons.mozilla.org is PR 9 baby! If your extension gets approved, that’s a permanent link!

57. Make an article about Digg - Diggers REALLY dig posts about digg. Seriosly, very easy to take advantage of that. Remember the chick who made a song about Digg LINK? Works.

58. Blog about twitter – Hey, what the heck, Twitter is ON FIRE, it’s hot. Think about it, almost every Twitter app out there gets its time on the spot light at least once.

59. Eye catching design – This technique works best on design blogs (or other related topics). The idea is, make a great, unique design and get featured on design blogs like Smashing Magazine and CSS galeries.

5-minute changes

Actually, I’m pretty sure the stuff below won’t even take 5 minutes to set up. The reward is great and turnkey. I recommend doing the two…

60. Domain canonicalization – The name is the only one scary, this is just an easy fix. I made an article about domian canonicalization before.

61. Take advantage of scrapers - They are damn pesky but not “that” smart. They grab content from your blogs through your RSS feed – they grab the whole post INCLUDING links. So if you’re linking back to your blog in that post, they’ll link to that too. Of course you can’t always link back to your blog in every post, that would be weird. Here’s a plugin that’ll help you LINK.

Covert tactics

My favorite part, sneaky effective tactics here that requires very little work. Best part is, most stuff here are white hat – totally legit.

If you can’t finish the whole article, just finish this part, you’ll like it.

62. Post at .gov and .edu forums – One of my personal favorites. Totally whitehat and doesn’t require you to “think” at all. No kidding. Here’s a post I did back at 2007 on how to find .edu and .gov backlinks.

63. SELL your WordPress theme - Giving away WordPress themes with footer linking back to your site is old, still works, but old. What if you sell them? You get the link AND the cash. Besides, selling your WordPress theme instead of giving it away pumps up its perceive value. You also give better support because there’s less people to handle. (hint, hint)

64. Give FREE graphics and icons – I’m a big fan of slick icons and buttons and I bet you are too (if you’re not, you probably haven’t seen a good one yet!)

65. Referrer spam - I did an article about referrer spamming awhile back. Sneaky I tell you, but will definitely MAUL your reputation if you’re promoting a legit site. Your host should also be ready to get complaints because this is blatant spamming. On the bright side, this works well on made for affiliates/adsense sites ;-)

66. Create a web directory then “make them” link back to you - I’m pretty sure you’re familiar with web directories wherein you submit your site and they include it in their directory for a link back or for an upfront payment. Now instead of requesting them to link back to your directory, how about requesting a link back to your site? Shotgun but turnkey.

67. Buy an old domain – Buy and old domain, install WordPress on it and slap an article with your link. Easy. Old domains are more authoritative than new ones… well because they’re old – so they give more link juice. Tip: Buying old domains that has a good name is expensive, very. So I suggest getting something that’s just in the middle.

68. Huge do-follow list - Spend 30 minutes a day on commenting on do follow blogs and you’re in for some quality targeted backlinks. Catch? Takes a lot of time. You have to read the blog post, spark some conversation and “appear” natural. Other than that, definitely worth the try – 1200 Do-Follow Blog List.

69. Pattern interrupt – Another one stolen from NLP (btw, I’m NOT an NLP “guru”, I’m not even close to one, I just happen to know some of their “tricks”) pattern interupt, do something your niche is doing the other way around. Quick example is instead of selling ebooks, sell take home study courses, CD’s or DVD’s.

Be creative

There are literally hundreds of link building tactics out there, and I bet thousands of undiscovered stuff.

It’s pure creativity.

Discovering new “midget blog” sites and new human nature “ticklers” are all forms of creativity (or a day sitting infront of my laptop ;-)

Google Optimization

By the way, In a few weeks, I’m releasing my Google Optimization book. I’ve compiled the tips, tricks and techniques I did to my blog to get on the frontpage of Google for the keyword “make money online”.

I’m pretty sure you’ll like it. You can sign-up in the early bird list if you want.

P.S. I’m quite proud of it to say the least (who isn’t proud of their own work?)

The SEO Method that is going to explain below in detail, is a surefire method proven to rank you #1 on all major Search Engines listed thus: Google, Yahoo Search and MSN.

On this post we will learn how to Rank #1 on your Primary Keyword regardless of how competitive it is.

Before we deep our feet to the SEO method, you need to first set some objectives for your site. Otherwise there is no need of Ranking #1 for the sake of it.

The two main objectives that any internet marketer should have in mind are:

a) Drive traffic to their $$$ Money Site i.e. if you have a product that you own and sell.

b) Drive traffic to a squeeze page i.e. if you are building an email list where you can promote your affiliate products or can use for future launch of some product that you are working on.

c) A bonus goal is drive traffic to a site that you have monetized on Adsense or other affiliate programs.

NB: As far as am concerned it’s not wise to drive traffic directly to an affiliate link even if you are using PPC – Pay per Click Advertising, I’d rather review the affiliate product on my site and drive my traffic there or even better use a redirect Link that I have control of in Future.

We are going to Focus on Three Main Stages:

i. Article and Directory Submissions

§ Ezine Articles

§ Other Article Directories

§ Blog Networks

§ Directory Submission

ii. Social Networks

§ Web 2.0

§ Social Bookmarking

§ Videos

iii. Own Networks

§ Build your own Networks and Sites

As you can see you need to have a pre-existing business or the money side of your web presence at the middle. To mean that you are linking back to your site with an objective which is either making you money or generating leads through organic sources from your primary and secondary Keywords.

Am not going through the trouble of helping you identify a Niche or keywords for your business we will do that on another post.

This method can be used on sites to rank #1 on major search engines regardless of the site you are promoting whether it’s a blog, an ecommerce site, a static site etc it’s a one for all method. You could be selling goods via air, waterways and roads or are just selling digital or downloadable products. Again this method works for all types of sites.

As a reminder our headline is the long term goal to rank #1 and remain unreachable by your competition not some black hat technique that will get you on top and then the following day you are disqualified and perceived to be playing some games with search engines.

i. Ezine Articles – using ezinearticles.com you can submit 10 -15 quality and original articles linking back directly to your site on www.yourdomain.com with primary keywords as well as other secondary links on your domain. You can outsource for some articles using Guru.com or RentACoder or even better use the instant article Wizard to generate articles for your Niche and containing your

ii. The other Step is to submit re-written PRL articles to other article directories. You can do 20 – 300 of them over time. Again make sure you use your primary keywords and the secondary ones to link back to the money side of your business as well as on the secondary links within your site. For every article you can submit to various directories at the same time. Personally I use the Semi-automatic submitter i.e. submitterbot.com it’s Free and with one membership site you it can help register you to other hundreds of article directory sites. Make sure your articles meet the ezinearticles.com standards, this adds the probability of your articles been accepted in other directories easily.

iii. Blog Networks – There are hundreds if not thousands of blog Networks out there. However it’s wise to check on Premium Networks where to avoid being disqualified by search engines and be seen to be playing some game. Incase you use the Free Blog networks then be careful not to link to your money side but rather link to your articles in 1 and 2 above and eventually the juice will flow back to the money side of your business safely. If you look carefully you can identify this principle in the diagram above. You put your target to 50 -100 blog networks. Again there is no hurry but you do this overtime.

iv. Directory Submission – This used to be very effective and is still is today. You can submit to between 100 and 150 directories and make sure all the links flow directly to your money side and very minimal if any on the secondary links on your site. Again with Submitterbot.com you can submit your Link to over 500 directories with a title and a small description.

v. Web 2.0 – There are many definitions for web 2.0 but I simply refer to it as websites with user generated content. A good example is wordpress, blogger, Squidoo among others. What you do is get an account with them and publish content with links back to your money side and secondary links on your site as well. With this platform you can do 5-10 submissions

vi. Social Bookmarking – This includes Sites like Facebook, Digg, Stumble Upon, Myspace, etc. You can be creative here and see if you can join related groups in these networks and share your links back to your web 2.0 articles and none direct to your money side or even secondary links on your domain, Unless your money side business is a blog and not some product sales letter or static site. Most people strive to be on Digg Front page but as you have seen there are loads of other things you can do to get targeted organic traffic from search engines using your primary keywords. You can bookmark to between 100 and 150 sites.

vii. Videos- With a world where people have developed a culture of sitting their butt and watching T.V. then videos come in Handy. In this category you can do between 1 to Infinite Videos just make sure they are viral hence easily shared. You can share your videos via social book marking and let them point directly to your money side domain as well as links to your social book marking sites. Again you can uses services such as Youtube and other premium sites.

viii. Your Own Networks. Remember your goal is to build an online business that has an ongoing leverage. As you have noticed there is lots of hard work involved. Under this section you can register 5 -10 domains register them under different names so that they can appear natural and leave them to mature for two to three years. Then post some articles pointing to your money side domain. You can also monetize on these domains using opportunities like AdSense and/or affiliate Links

Please note the number of times to use any of the tools above is not limited to the number of times you can use it. If you are already ranking #1 on your preferred Search Engines then you can apply the said techniques from time to time to make sure you retain your position and if you are not yet on top 10 then start applying the said methods using the given tools and later on you will realize that constant dripping can hollow a stone.

Action Points:

A. Get your money Side of the Business ready before you start SEO.

B. Identify your primary Keyword(s) from the beginning and be consistent with it/ them throughout the SEO Method application.

C. Measure your Work from time to time using tools like Alexa.com, Google page rank, Unique Visitors on your stats etc before you start using revenue as your measuring tool, this will encourage you along the way.

D. Use third party services for your products e.g. PayDotCom.com to avoid affiliates messing with your domain name directly and get Search engines penalizing you on this, hence putting this SEO Method to Null.

E. Finally, don’t forget the basics; e.g. Meta tags, Search engine friendly URL’s, <h1> title tags as Carl teaches, commenting on other with your links e.t.c.

In conclusion you may feel free to link to this article, comment and share your methods, mine works but it’s not the only way. You may also pick on one of the tools and expand on it fully; otherwise if I was to expound on each of them I’d have to do an ebook, Lol…

If you like this article there is a membership site to be launched in six months time called integrated Internet Marketing that helps ordinary offline businesses to adopt online marketing as well as helping the Digital Products Internet marketers to build successful, ongoing and profitable Online businesses.

We also will be able to turn such great Formula articles as this into videos, as The Expert David Jenyns has done and then later on share them to members on our site

To your Success,

Currently there is a very tough competition on the Internet when it comes to creating traffic and techniques to attract visitors. Although SEO techniques could help one way or the other, but due to the reality of so many blogs being created daily with so many people also competing on the same technique. I think there will always be some new trend of ways and technique that other blogger should adopt for you to be able to cope out with this fast changing world.

Well remember the saying, that the only constant thing in this world is change.

I will use leverage here as some techniques in which you use other people’s resources or effort as well as also giving back in exchange of the favor you done for them.

Here are 2 personal blogging leverage that I think could be of help

1. Looking for other blogger that is open for guest blogs.

Although this is a common practice, but this one is really effective. This helps you established a good relationship with the blogger as well as being given the opportunity to create traffic by being a guest blogger, specially if the blogsite is already a well known blog or website.

2. Try to scout for some foundations, orphanage, church communities of your religions, civic organizations, clubs, and non-government organizations or by which their organization is divided whether into chapters or districts.

Try to approach their leaders or the press officer and lay-out this plan for them in a way that they will understand that both parties will benefit from it. Just make sure that they are open-minded people when it comes to technology.

And why this one could help? Because still there are so many of them out there who have lots and lots of activities and press releases that they want to put into a blog or website but no one can do it for them. You can volunteer to put up a site whether it’s a blog or just a pure website for them in exchange of the posts, write-ups and articles that they will provide for you. While you just add your affiliate marketing posts and links in exchange of your service.

However this 2 techniques will still depend on the blogger’s way of communicating as well as the sincerity and credibility of doing such approach.

Whatever you choose, try to put your heart in it and you might not notice that you had done 1 step further to your goals.

Keep on Blogging : )

Without any ranting let me tell you my answer first .My answer to the question “Is link building through guest blogging better than comment posting” is ‘I do not know’.So then why am i giving you this article ? Because i want you to know it is still uncertain that which method is viewed as superior in the eyes of Google bots .So do not just stick with the link building through blog commenting.

Try to build links through both Guest blogging and blog commenting. Most of the webmasters believe that Google is capable of finding where the link to a particular blog or website lies [whether on the article or on any other sections on a webpage].How does Google detect it ? Simple.Google might see if there are surrounding texts in the links to your blog.Another way to detect the Blogroll links or the footer links would be to see which section of webpage is repeated through the entire webpages in the domain .By this way Google might come to a conclusion that the link has not been obtained through the article but either through commenting or footer links .

You might all be knowing the fact that Googlers also play a vital role in tweaking the Google algorithms.I mean people working in Google dont just develop the algorithms, test them and leave them do everything on their own.Optimizing the algorithms is a continuous process.People responsible for the Google algorithm optimization would definitely be knowing every way we bloggers and SEO people try to dominate the SERP and are constantly trying to counteract them.So it makes perfect sense they might also be looking into these matters [link building through comments].So nothing can be taken for granted. My advice as i already said is to concentrate on both methods of link building. As far as my method of link building is concerned i use varied sources for my links.I use both methods discussed here .But i make sure i read the article and then give out a useful comment. So i request you to do the same on blogs on which you comment solely for the purpose of link building. There is so much to do after starting a blog and creating articles on your blog. One of the thing that you must do is link building. So make sure you spend a lot of time reading link building articles and also involve actively in link building. This is what would be deciding whether your blog lives long or dies in a short period.

There is nothing said by Google regarding all these mysteries. The only thing we could do is to concentrate on both rather than just relying on blog commenting. And i feel that Guest blogging is much more than blog commenting.Guest blogging can be much more useful to your blog reputation than blog commenting.Yes ofcourse Guest blogging might be a tedious process because blog owners would need you to give a unique and quality article but it is definitely worth. There are many bloggers unaware of what guest blogging means.Hope this article gets them going in the right track .I have made observations about what popular bloggers and SEO people say about link building through articles and other ways [commenting ] .Let me give you the screen shots below :

Aaron Wall has suggested below that commenting does not add to search engine value but iam not sure if he meant the nofollow links or both types :

As you could have seen in the above screenshots, there is so much uncertainty about this topic ; so make sure you try out both methods and increase your blog authority.I would love to hear what you think about the link building methods just discussed .So please drop your comments below.

If you plan to dominate the search engines you are going to need backlinks, and if you are going to spend your time building backlinks then they might as well from strong authority websites. Of course you are all now staring at your monitor wondering how you are supposed to do that, right?

Actually, its pretty easy! There are literally millions of prime link spots just waiting to be picked by the next person who strolls along, you just have to find them! First I will show you how to find your own backlinks and then I will share some of my secret stash with all of you.

Best Methods for Building Authority Links

There are so many different ways to find and build backlinks, some methods will vary from niche to niche. Here are my favorites, why not see how you can adapt them to fit your website.

Become a Guest Contributor – Carl did a great job of covering guest blogging in another post, so I will just touch on this briefly. You can almost guarantee that there is at least one website/blog in your niche that will accept a guest post, you just have to find them. For instance, if you are in the real estate industry you can write for sites like Real Estate License Direct, in the make money online and home based business industry you can write for Carl and many others. I usually find a site that I like and send them a friendly email expressing my interest in writing for them, you will be amazed at how easy it is.

Social Communities – There are so many authority social communities out there that using them to build backlinks could easily take weeks. While social bookmarking is a great way to build easy links, its not the only option in town. You can also use your profile pages to build links. Some social communities also offer free blogs that you can utilize as a link building resource. Be sure to check back on your pages and see that they were indexed by the search engines. It never hurts to drop a few links to those pages so that they will get picked up by Google.

Blog Commenting - This is one method that I tend to use very conservatively. I am not a big fan of spammers, so I try to always add quality comments and contribute to each blog. Becoming a part of the community is often more valuable than the link itself, so keep that in mind the next time you are dropping a quick comment. Here is a list of over 500 dofollow blogs to get you started.

Forum Signatures - Link building via forum signatures is a debateable method, some think they are of little value and others disagree. I have seen plenty of websites rank very well thanks in large part to their forum signatures so I feel that they do add value. There are a lot of authority forums out there, here is a list.

Article Marketing – If used selectively, article marketing can be a great way to build links for your niche site. Google has devalued many of these links, so you are best to only contribute unique articles to the highest authority article directories.

I am sure I am forgetting a few methods, but those should get you started. I know from experience that just the above methods could literally take you months to cover completely.

3 Authority Backlinks You Can Build Today:

Below are 5 authority websites that allow dofollow backlinks. I highly recommend that you use these resources with care or the webmasters will certainly stop allowing new links.

Stanford Law School - Visit http://cyberlaw.stanford.edu/people-and-blogs click on an article title, click on add a comment, fill out the form include a relevant on topic comment and you will have an authority dofollow .edu backlink to your site.

Wikio – Visit http://www.wikio.com, click on sign-up in the upper right hand corner, create and verify your account, log-in to the website and click on publish an article, fill out the article title and body, preview and click submit. You are done!

MSDN Blogs - Visit http://blogs.msdn.com click on the join link, fill out your information, verify the account, return to http://blogs.msdn.com, click on a recently published title and leave a good comment on the page. There are numerous blogs on this site, it is a pr 7 and most blogs have dofollow comments.

These link opportunities don’t even put a dent in the available links out there, but they will give you an idea of what to look for, how to go about getting the links and how to find similar links on other websites. Enjoy and remember what one ancient wise man once said:

He who abuses his link sources will soon no longer have any link sources to abuse!

PNH offers the very best self improvement advice from his blog, pnhnetwork.com. Visit his blog today for 57 Home Based Business Ideas to Get the Money Rolling!

Just wanted to get your thoughts on article marketing. Is it a good system to get backlinks and a good position in SERPS for low to medium competitive keywords, with under 1 million results.

Article marketing is very old school, to say the least.

The technique works like this…

You write a 300 word article with an about the author blurb at the bottom slapped with your link then you submit it to hundreds of article directories. It worked like a charm then because Google won’t mind duplicate articles – but today, Google doesn’t give that much weight to links from duplicate articles.

So most people nowadays submit an article to the top article directories only, wait for it to rank in the search engine results page (SERPS) then traffic comes – but not so many backlinks and not that quality.

How Do You Gain Backlinks Through Article Marketing Today?

Imagine, you write a 300 word article, submit it to one website and the next day, your traffic jumps, your article spreads to hundreds of websites and you get quality backlinks.

Not a lot, but quality.

The New Article Marketing

The idea is simple, instead of submitting your article into article directories, you submit it to authoritative blogs in your niche.

Basically, when your article gets posted on their blog, you get a backlink just like in the about the author blurb.

But here’s 5 magical things the new article marketing has to offer…

You get traffic on the day your article gets posted

You only submit to one blog

You get targeted traffic

Your article will be talked about on the blog giving a chance for it to spread on other blogs too

You get quality backlinks

In My Experience

Back to Adam’s question, is it a good system to get backlinks and a good position in SERPS for low to medium competitive keywords, with under 1 million results?

It’s good.

It still works in my experience – but why not go to the best which is the new article marketing?

Less work, more results.

What is referer spamming anyway?

It’s gonna make webmasters red hot angry as this link building tactic spams your log files with fake referers that links back to the spammer’s website.

Analytics like Webalizer and Awstats that offer public display of stats are its main target – specifically, analytics that rank referer stats. With over thousands of fake hits they send to your website, there’s no way their site wouldn’t rank high in your logs. After ranking in your log, they get an easy free link.

Referer – that’s a single “r” by the way.

Referer spamming is not new at all, it’s been round for ages! It just so happen that the monster bit this lil’ blog. Not an ordinary spammer though, pretty tricky and well planned – although I’m not surprised at all, because spamming has also developed well over the years!

By morning today, I checked my WP stats dashboard for a quick view of my stats. Surprisingly, under the search engine traffic tab, x-rated keywords bombarded me. I checked Google Analytics for a detailed view and have a look on some of my keywords…

What this scum did was to spam me with fake referers from Google. Why? Well, to get my attention. His site (I’m not mentioning it) is on the first page of most these keywords. If he spams thousands of blogs with these then most likely webmasters will check if they actually rank for these keywords. The webmasters would eventually end up to his website if they google for that keyword. Pretty smart eh?

The solution

We don’t want people to mess up with our records, we need it to be as accurate as possible.

So to stop these kind of spam, you will have to add these few lines of code in your .htaccess file…

# Options +FollowSymlinks
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} ^http://(www\.)?spammerdomain1.*$ [OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} ^http://(www\.)?spammerdomain2.*$ [OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} ^http://(www\.)?spammerdomain3.*$ [OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} ^http://(www\.)?spammerdomain4.*$ [OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} ^http://(www\.)?spammerdomain5.*$
RewriteRule .* – [F,L]

That will give the spammer a forbidden error when visiting with a referer of the listed domains.

In my case however, the spammer faked their referer as Google – obviously I won’t block that! I’d be a pure douche if I did :-)

Here’s the code to block results by their keyword…

# Options +FollowSymlinks
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} ^http://(www\.)?.*(-|.)?keyword1(-|.).*$ [OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} ^http://(www\.)?.*(-|.)?keyword2(-|.).*$ [OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} ^http://(www\.)?.*(-|.)?keyword3(-|.).*$ [OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} ^http://(www\.)?.*(-|.)?keyword4(-|.).*$ [OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} ^http://(www\.)?.*(-|.)?keyword5(-|.).*$
RewriteRule .* – [F,L]

Sneaky link building tactic but can be blocked by one click. Bye fake referers!

Update: A guy emailed me asking if faking referer can be done via browsers. Well yes of course, here’s a Firefox plugin called Refcontrol. The risk is up to you ;-)

Anyway it can still help if you’re just starting a new blog. Link exchanges can give you a pretty decent amount of traffic just to start off, but remember to remove it after you have built your traffic.

Yesterday I got an e-mail asking for a link exchange that honestly, really, ACTUALLY sucks!

Here’s the mail.

Dear owner of http://www.carlocab.com/,

I’m the webmaster of http://www.***.com.

We came across your site on the Internet and feel that it would fit
perfectly into our collection of quality software-related links at

http://www.***.com.

The Google PR of this site is currently 0.

We’ve already placed a link to your web site along with a description
at our site on the http://www.***.com/links.html page,
which we encourage you to check for accuracy.

We’d appreciate it if you place a link back to our site using the
following HTML code (just copy and paste it into your links page):

< xhref=”http://www.***.com” title=”Make Money Online
All-in-one money Machine

All-in-one money Machine

Earn multiple streams of cash with Top-rated business opportunities

If you’d like the description of your site modified, the category
changed, or if you have any other cross-promotion ideas, feel free to
email us.

Please note that if you don’t place a reciprocal link to us somewhere
on your site within a week, the link to your site will automatically
be removed from our directory. Please link to us using the code above,
and let us know where we can find the link.

Best regards,

This is NOT SPAM — this is a one-time reciprocal link request. We
have NO INTENTION to email you again. You can also reply to this email
with REMOVE in the subject line to make sure we’ll NEVER send you any
more e-mails in the future.

This message really made me laugh and angry in some kind of way,

What made me mad?! Well, It looks like this guy just automated it and <strike>saying</strike> shouting at me that it was not. “This is NOT SPAM, bla bla bla?

You don’t want to end up like that guy would you? Of course not! So here are some tips that I have compiled for a better chance of link exchange acceptance

Talk like you’re talking to your friend – Not dear owner of http://thissite.

Never tell your PR if it’s a 0 – He sounds serious but that part, really wrecks the whole thing. heh

Don’t give HTML codes – Don’t ask too much when asking for a link exchange and remember not to suggest your anchor text first. Let the site owner agree first after you do business

You’re not a teacher! – “On your page, the code will look like…” Who are you anyway?! You’re not my html teacher, and oh yea.. I don’t have one. People hate it when someone teaches them things that they already know. I don’t know why, but you might as well avoid it.

Do not threaten – “Please note that if you don’t place a reciprocal link to us…” Who likes to be threatened anyway? Again, let’s go back to number 1 “Talk like you’re talking to your friend”

Just in case you need a link exchange template, I have edited and refined the e-mail above.

Hi Name!

(Remember to put his name so it doesn’t look a bit spammy)

I’m Carl, a 14-year old blogger from the Philippines. I blog at http://www.carlocab.com

(Introduce yourself first. Make them a bit curious so they will click your link)

You’ve got a great blog out there I love your posts and most likely the recent one about the some kind of an article. I already subscribed to your feed because I found your blog very useful.

If you have time, can you give me some tips on how to improve my blog? I’m really willing to learn from someone good like you.

(Flattery )

And by the way, I’m looking for link exchange partners. I think it would benefit us both, so maybe you might want to give it a shot.

I already added your site in the list, just in case

(Here comes the Link Exchange!)

Cheers from Philippines!
Carl Ocab

http://www.carlocab.com

I almost forgot, try your best to not use a free e-mail like @yahoo.com or @gmail.com so you look more professional.

If you have any thoughts, comments, criticisms you might as well share it to me

Recently, I watched a training CD about Search Engine Optimization by James

Gonzales and it made me realize the importance of links in my website.

Some of the things I learned are:

Links make it easier for engines to find your pages.

They also bring people to your pages.

Links are used as a measure of the site’s value.

They provide information about the page theypoint to.

These are the reasons why links are important in a website. Search engine robots follow the link and they are indexed in their listings. For people, links bring people to your pages especially if they are interested about the link information. Links are also treated as a reference and it is a must if the information or idea you are discussing is from another source. One of the three factors that is important when optimizing your website is the link popularity. It is a ranking score based on the number of incoming links. The more links, the better the ranking. This is the reason why I joined this program of a 13-year-old money-maker because I want to get a backlink from his website to increase my link popularity and hopefully, to increase my pagerank.
