The last year has been pretty far from comfortable. In fact it’s been a year of hard work, determination, failures, successes, hair pulling frustration and confusion. And I think many beginner marketers who are trying to make money online can relate to this.

However, when you come through the other side of the initial baptism of fire, this making money online “thing” all becomes very clear! You develop a system that you know works, and you can replicate that system to scale your income up to heights previously unimaginable.

In this article I’m going to share with you the exact system that I am using today to create a full time income online in the hope that it’ll help you avoid a lot of the pains that I went through to figure it all out!

My Six Step Process to Making Money Online

I’m going to give you a high level overview of how I make money online and then I’m going to break each step down, one by one, to give you a greater insight. Here’s the system:

1. Find a hungry market
2. Create a web site
3. Build a qualified list of names and email addresses
4. Build a relationship with the subscribers
5. Promote genuinely useful products to the email list list
6. Scale the system up by driving traffic to the web site

And that’s all there is to it. Of course when you break it down to a lower level things get a bit more complicated:

Step 1 – Finding a Hungry Market

I have to say that this is arguably the most important part of the whole process. If you can find a hungry market then you don’t really need to be great at selling and people will still purchase from you.

I liken this to coming across a crowd of thirsty people in the middle of the Sahara desert…You could charge $40 for a glass of water and they’d still buy from you.

Ideally you want to find a crowd of people who have a problem with an emotional attachment, have money to spend, think about the problem more than once per day and like to talk about their problem (in online forums for example).

The three main markets in which there are a plethora of profitable niches are “health”, “wealth” and “relationships”. Human nature dictates that consumers will always look for ways to improve their situation in any of those three markets.

Step 2 – Create a Web Site

Many people think that creating the web site is the most important part of the process. Personally, I think it’s the least important. Sure, you can’t live without a web site, but the match between the hungry market and the offer are much more important than a web site with fancy graphics.

That said, you do need to have a web presence. The only web sites I ever build are “squeeze pages” – they are called this because the aim is to “squeeze” the visitor into entering their name and email address into an opt-in form. Which brings me nicely onto the third step…

Step 3 – Build Your List

If you think about it from a logical point of view then we, as marketers, should always be striving to improve the revenue per visitor to our web site. Why? Because free traffic is hard to get and the higher your value per visitor the more chance you have for running profitable paid advertising campaigns.

Building your list is one of the biggest revenue per visitor multipliers. By building a list you are creating an ever increasing pool of targeted prospects who you can reach at any time.

The marketing rule of 7 dictates:

”that a prospect needs to see or hear your marketing message at least seven times before they take action and buy from you. Now the number seven isn’t cast in stone. The truth of the Rule of Seven is you can’t just engage in a marketing activity and then be done. Marketing must be an on-going process in order for it to be successful.”

In making money online terms, this means that the majority of visitors to your web site will not buy straight away. They will likely need to build up some sense of familiarity with the product you are trying to promote first. Building a list allows you to generate that sense of familiarity in a very effective way – in fact, my conversion rate went up over 300% when I first created an email campaign at the back of my web site.

Step 4 – Build The Relationship With Your Subscribers

If a friend of yours recommended a product to you and then a random guy off the street recommended a different product – which one would you purchase? Of course you’d take the advice of your friend…Why? Because you feel you can trust him/her.

It’s a similar concept online. A recent study showed that the biggest conversion killer is actually distrust. Often, consumers believe that they are going to get scammed by being sold a rubbish product and it stops them from making the purchase.

This is why I focus on providing real value to my subscribers for free. Every time I send an email with free material to my subscribers I make sure there’s so much value packed in the content that they’ll be truly thankful and grateful for having received the email.

The “power of free” is massive – the more you give up front, the more you’ll get back in return when you promote a paid product.

Step 5 – Promote Genuinely Useful Products

I’m now at the stage where I can promote genuinely useful products to my list. These products can be ones that I’ve created or other people’s products as an affiliate for a commission.

I always make sure that I do my due diligence on the product before I promote it. The last thing I want to do is alienate the buyers by promoting rubbish.

Taking this a step further – I like to build up what’s called a profit funnel. This is a series of products ranging from low value to high value that I promote at relevant stages in my email campaign to my subscribers. A complete profit funnel can really increase your value per visitor tremendously.

Step 6 – Drive Traffic!

Now the system is in place all I need to do is drive traffic to my web site.

In the first instance I’ll drive traffic for free to see how well my offer converts. I’ll often make tweaks to my email campaign to try and improve conversion. Once I’m happy with the conversion rate I will work out my value per subscriber and per visitor.

With these figures I can then go and find paid advertising sources (such as banner ads and pay per click) and test them over a period of a couple of weeks. Once I’ve found a good source of traffic and an ad, it’s simply a case of scaling up across different sites and networks for increased traffic.

Once you’re at this stage, it’s simply a case of increasing the traffic to grow your income.

This is POSSIBLE!!

When you read this article it seems like a lot of work but actually it isn’t as much as it sounds. You can do the entire process in the space of 4 weeks before moving onto your next hungry market. Remember, this game is all about baby steps – take one step at a time and that way you don’t feel intimidated by anything.

It may be bad news for some, but not just any camera will do.  There are certain expectations that the microstock photography agencies have when they review your photo application.  This review process will be done when you first join (where you must get a certain number of photos approved to qualify) and when you submit photos after.  This is how they weed out the poor photographers.  You should check out the minimum megapixel and size requirements before you submit your photos.  This will give you an inside track to what the agency’s expectations are and you will save yourself a lot of time and energy.

Creativity

Anyone can take a picture of an orange.  So why do other people’s orange photos sell better than yours?  Aside from picture quality and lighting, there is a creative aspect to every shot.  Think artistically when you are shooting the orange.  What could you add to the picture to make it jump out at you?  Should the shot be isolated?  Should you slice it in half?  You can do multiple things with one object to appeal to different people.  The name of the game here is diversity.  The more ways you can depict one object, the more opportunities you will have of selling an image.

What to Shoot

There is a market for everything.  You can shoot a photo of the ground and someone may eventually buy it and use it as a background.  Some markets are becoming saturated.  What comes to your mind first?  Don’t think that you are the only one who thought about it.  Do some research and see if there is a lot of competition in that field.  As with anything else on the internet, if you can find a niche to break into with microstock photography you will be more successful.  It’s definitely okay to shoot outside your niche, but those photos may not sell as well.

Keyword your Photos

Marketing your Microstock photos is similar to marketing a website in that you have to use the right keywords in order to attract the right customers.  You should use as many relevant keywords as possible to describe your photos.  You should think in specific, broad, and related terms.  You can even target some misspellings if you have enough keyword space.  This can be a good way to tap into unclaimed markets on the major microstock sites.  Choosing proper keywords is almost as important as taking quality photos.

There are many other factors that will affect how well your microstock photography sells.  Using different lighting on the same object may appeal to different people.  Editing the imperfections out of your photos is also a major factor.  Microstock photography is for professionals and semi-professionals.  If you have a creative mindset and a fair amount of patience, you can create a good supplemental income through microstock photography.  You might even be able to make a living.

The internet is filled with thousands of different ways to make a living.  You can build websites for people, blog, write articles, sell photography, and so much more.  So why is it that people limit themselves to doing just one thing?  Complacency is a trap that people fall into after they have become successful with something.  Once they start bringing in a decent residual income, they lose their drive.  This is the time to move on.

Don’t Overdo It

Never underestimate the power of goal setting.  Goals can drive you to succeed if you set them correctly.  Don’t set your goals to high or you could become frustrated.  The name of the game is making them attainable.  They will give you something to strive for, and let you know what you need to work on.  This will help bring each project to maturity much quicker than before.  It is a way to self motivate when feeling unmotivated.

When to Move On?

As you move up in the ranks of the internet, it will become much harder to improve.   Competition becomes exponential and instead of competing with individuals, you start competing with corporations.  If you are up for this challenge then more power to you.  If not, it could be time to start a new project.

What Happens After I Move On?

Don’t confuse moving on with stopping work on that project.  You do need to tend to it occasionally or you will suffer a loss in earnings.  This is especially true for blogs because your readers expect you to write.  You are just going to focus a greater portion of your efforts elsewhere.  You may even want to start outsourcing some of your work.

Chances are that you are good at more than just one thing.  So why limit yourself to just one thing.  After creating a successful website or blog, you can build a new one and feed off of your first one’s success.  The possibilities on the internet are limitless if you have the strength of conviction.

But why not do it while monetizing your blog?

It only takes several minutes to setup some simple monetization for a blog – or if you’re like me who can’t figure out HTML, it’s going to take a couple of hours but after that it’s good to go :-)

Why you shouldn’t monetize your blog now

There’s a downside though.

Monetizing your blog can make you a bit statsaholic and make you check your Affiliate account/Adsense account from time to time. While you see cents everyday, it drives your focus of generating good content for your blog away.

But the way I see it, it’s a matter of discipline. Time will come, you’ll have to monetize your blog. So why not start disciplining your self to stop checking your accounts and prioritize tasks?

The last couple of months I got the most severe case of… guess what?

Seriously, I’ve been juggling 5 projects. Add to that the holidays plus school work (I’m at senior year, high school)

The TRUE Secret

With that experience, I realized how important the tip “focus” is. I knew it before and I’ve heard of it a lot of times but I never really paid that much attention to it.

But before that, let me show some examples (cause i find it funny that even before, focus really IS the true secret)

300 – 300 Spartans fought thousands of Persian soldiers by focusing on one little narrow pass called Thermopylae. They funneled all the Persian soldiers in one pass and concentrated on only one side.

Blitzkrieg - The infamous blitzkrieg, focus on one single area and flood em’ with tanks, soldiers and air power. Served the German pretty well.

NBA – Ok that’s a weird jump but I think that also proves that FOCUS can be, should be applied anywhere.

Most players on the NBA before (way back! The time when they didn’t have a 3 point line) were all rounded. To play you have to be good at dribbling, shooting, rebounding and all skills. But look how players play today, each player focuses on 1 skill. One is good at dribbling, one at shooting, one at rebounding then they put it all together. They play better.

How did that happen? Because each player were able to train and master a specific skill instead of practicing all of it to get well rounded.

Here’s The Game Plan…

Now let’s put that into a business perspective. Let’s say you’ve got 3 projects. Each project consists of 3 weeks of work, on the 3rd week you make money.

The multitasker, let’s call him Thomas just for the sake of sounding cool, would do:

Week 1 – Project 1
Week 2 – Project 2
Week 3 – Project 3
Week 4 – Project 1
Week 5 – Project 2
Week 6 – Project 3
Week 7 – Complete Project 1 and Make Money!
Week 8 – Complete Project 2 and Make Money!
Week 9 – Complete Project 3 and Make Money!

That means it took Thomas 7 weeks before he started making money.

Now here’s Hocus Focus Max would do:

Week 1 – Project 1
Week 2 – Project 1

Week 6 – Complete Project 2 and Make Money!
Week 7 – Project 3

To me this is very crucial because I’ve missed this for a long time.

As you can see, Thomas makes money on weeks 7, 8 and 9 but Hocus Focus Max makes money on weeks 3, 6 and 9. That means Max makes money earlier and if Max is even smarter, he’ll use that money to finish the other projects faster.

Thomas however, makes money on the last 3 weeks – but that doesn’t include the time between switching projects to work on.

The idea of building and running a profitable Internet business from the comfort of your own home sounds great, and I’ve seen a lot of people get very excited at the thought of doing this.

As great and awesome that may sound, one has to carefully think about the effects of building an Internet business, both from the positive and negative aspects.

You might think that there can ONLY be positive effects since everyone out there is talking how they are making 5 or 6 figure per month easily and effortlessly.

Well, nothing could be further from the truth.

You see, when trying to build a successful online business, 99% of the time you’re NOT going to make any money at all when you’re just getting started.

Employees who have been enjoying consistent, fixed income continue to bring in that amount for the rest of their working lives while still having to work the normal 9 to 5.

Clearer picture

Having read this far, you should now have a clearer picture of the risks and rewards associated with building and running your own online business. There are so many ways to drive traffic online that it can be confusing for new marketers. If you are just starting out learning how to make money online, you may need to focus on traffic generation methods that have been proven to work. One of the most effective methods of traffic generation is article marketing.

What exactly is article marketing and how is traffic driven using this technique?

Article marketing is the process of writing and distributing useful articles that is related to the website you are trying to promote. When you write and interesting article and publish it on an article directory, you get both short, mid and long term traffic.

Firstly, not all article directories accept affiliate links. Affiliate links are simply URLs that point directly to the affiliate website. Secondly, what happens if the offer that you are promoting goes offline? You would be driving traffic to a webpage that is not making you any money.

It’s best that you have control over the traffic source. If you direct the traffic to your own website, you can always replace the offer with another active offer and continue to make money online.

If you really don’t want to buy your own domain name, you can always consider using a free blog from Blogspot.com or WordPress.com to promote your products and services.

To ensure that you get a high approval rates from the article directories, make sure that you have some solid content on your website. Add a few articles to your site. They don’t take too long to write. The reason why you have to do this is because Ezinearticles (the top article directory on the Internet) rejects URLs with nothing but advertising on them. In other words, don’t just paste a bunch of ads and affiliate links on your website. Add some images and content to make your site look like a real site with content.

If you have your own products to promote, you may add these products to your website to promote. But if you don’t, you can always grab some killer products from the Clickbank marketplace or the CPA networks.

Joining Clickbank or one of the CPA networks is free. It’s a little harder to get into CPA networks these days and they usually require phone verification. Once your account has been activated, you can promote any of the offers you see in the CPA network.

CPA stands for Cost Per Action. This means that you don’t have to make an actual sale to make a commission. It may be a download, a lead registration, or someone adding their ZIP code to a form. For every lead that you capture, you are paid a small sum of money. Of course, for offers that require a sale, you stand to make a much larger commission.

Now that your money making machine has been setup, it’s time to start driving traffic.

Driving traffic with article marketing.

Driving traffic with articles is an effective method to get targeted traffic. But you do need to know what you are doing. Start by preparing your articles for submission.

• Working on the headline. – The headline of your article must be creative and be able to capture the attention of your target prospects. What are some problems they are facing? Do you have the solution that they want? For example, if someone is facing a hair loss problem, they will probably respond to a headline that offers a hair loss prevention home remedy. If your headline is not interesting enough, the rest of the article becomes useless.
• Write a good article summary. – Most article directories accept the first two or three sentences of your article as an article summary. There are a couple of approaches that you can adopt.
