Turn The Tables On Me

By Carl On June 25, 2009 Under Experiments, Featured, Reader Questions

I’m feeling of doing something “radical” today…

I’m gonna open up the comment section and let you “critique” me.

But to add a little twist, the person who makes the best critique wins a copy of my Ultimate Blogging Theme ($97) and my soon to be released Google optimization book, Feed Kid Google ($47).

I’ve got to tell you, you’ve got tons of stuff to critique about me…

  • My writing – I easily switch plural and singular stuff
  • The design – The UBT is tested, but not perfect. Testing just keeps going on and on.
  • Your first impression – This one I can’t test all the time. I’ve already asked almost all of my friends about it and I’m still tweaking the blog up to now so I’ll appreciate your comment about the first impression.
  • How I portray myself – If they say Carl Ocab, what pops out of your mind? What do you think are my qualities?
  • Tons more, those are just the stuff that came to my mind first.

I’m not really like the “master” of blogging or something, heck I’m not even close to that so I’ll really appreciate your comments.

P.S. Winners will be hand picked :-)

You used the word “Rad” in one of your posts, it was shocking. I guess I don’t hear that, maybe once or twice in my life.

Your writing – I like the way you write, so there is nothing I can really say about it.

The design – UBT is the best theme I had ever use, but I think the UBD Plugin on the side bar seems to have problem, and if possible make the comment section more appealing.

My first impression – simple and easy for eye’s view

How I portray you – The first kid that step foot into make money online blogging arena. (Sounds like Armstrong…) Of course you might not be the first but, you had make your name famous.

Just like Edison, his not the first to create electric bulb, is just that he knows how to market it to the world which make him the “name” as the first to create electric bulb.

I believe you are still learning your way to more impact marketing on the internet, even though your success is earlier then most of the people out there including me.

Your qualities may not be the best in most people’s mind but still you knowledge is far better then most bloggers out there, not including me of course.

In my opinion, your growing up as a kidblogger is an image to all kids that… it doesn’t matter what’s your age, “as long as you want you get it” even if you are still a kid playing online games.

The biggest thing that leaps out to me would be the nature of the monetization… that’s always puzzled me. I’ve always thought that the traffic you get would be a great way to monetize through $5 ebooks on SEO, link building, affiliate programs, etc. That’s just me though. :)

Your writing – I enjoy the way you write. It is not always perfect grammatically, but you get your points across clearly, which is most important.

Website design – Love it! That is why I purchase the multi-site package.

My first impression – I have been coming to this site for quite a while, as Make Money Online is my favorite search term and you have been in the top of the rankings for a long time. I actually was the original owner of the domain MakeMoneyOnline.com back in 1998, but sold it years ago. Wish I still had it now :)

How you portray yourself – As a successful young entrepreneur, which you are.

YingHang – Of course you can! If only the “perfect” people would critique me then there will be no comments at all ;-)

Cyrillicus – I’m glad to be the 3rd person to say it to you.

well here’s my critique, I think sometimes you forget that this blog is a make money online blog (an ESTABLISHED make money online blog to say)… I know you always keep on saying that you just try to write personal stuffs here but I think carlocab.com being probably one of the top 20 mmo blogs in the world, giving quality and good content on a consistent basis is a must… Not really saying that you shouldn’t be ‘personal’ with your blog (its yours anyway) but its like all people who read this blog always awaits and expects something (that is related to your niche)… I’ve heard a lot of people in forums say that they are sometimes disappointed w/your blog for lack of mmo type posts and for a lot of sponsored revs..

    just my 2 cents critique..

I wish that in some of your videos, you would introduce yourself as Carl Ocab.

As in “awe-cub” (somewhat, but you know what I mean), instead of “oh-cab” (where cab rhymes with taxi cab).

    Proud to be Pinoy! :-)

I’ll make a friendly, constructive critique on 4 things. Not that you suck, but I can critique anything on and on, which is why I’m keeping this one limited. ;)

Writing: I like how your writing style is quite relaxed and casual; it is quite informal compared to other “A bloggers,” but that is actually a good thing as you seem to be able to approach people without them feeling any bit of rejection. I guess something like that old lady down the road, except this time, it is a kid next door. :)

Design: I like UBT. I don’t have a copy myself (which is why I guess I’m writing this ;)) but it seems to be something like Thesis–extremely flexible and a one size fits all. However, three things I think I’d improve UBT in:
    1. Although UBT is supposed to be a copy of CarlOcab.com, I’d still make the default color scheme of UBT as something different; I see so many sites that I could mistakenly see as CarlOcab.com. Red/White/Black UBT should represent here, but I’d say you are slightly losing out on this over time, as more and more blogs are using the same color schemed UBT.
    2. Comment design isn’t that amazing. Although a SE friend design and easy navigation is key, you can still make this comment section amazing without killing the two characteristics of UBT.
    3. It would be awesome to modify the upper part of the design somehow so that you can have a profile picture somewhere. Approaching visitors in a friend manner seems to be key for UBT and you, but this site feels more commercial than friendly without such a photo of the author behind the blog.

First Impression: I feel that you are a friendly person and someone easy to approach as I’ve had this blog in my Google Reader for ages now and have not missed a post. However, for someone who isn’t like me and stumbled on this blog for the first time, you may feel a bit far to reach. I think the fact that you are young, yet you’ve achieved so much, might be what is creating that wall between you and a first timer. Again, I feel that can be easily fixed with a friendly profile pic or something along those lines on the very first page. I also feel that although this might be a bit deviating from the point of the blog, occasionally blogging about your life as a teen might help make this place look a bit more friendly to a first timer.

Your eBook: I really like how it told me things I needed to know in very few pages. However, I also did get the impression that you *might* have just wrote it for the heck of it. As I do know a thing or two about blogging and monetizing, I was able to put the pieces together. However, I would question if someone who had no knowledge in this industry and simply typed “make money online” in Google and stumbled on this blog would be able to get the full help from the eBook, as the “Master Plan” seems to promise by its name. Maybe expanding on a few details here and there might help. I liked that circular graph near the end of the eBook, but it might be better if you introduced it at the beginning and then started discussing about each of its components.

    I wasn’t too harsh, was I? ;)

@Static – harsh? not at all! i think we have a winner?

    Hey Carl,
here’s all my crictics and comments……………..

    Your writing:
You writing is GOOD (when you write) but you don’t really produce a good post in months. You posts are good but there appear on your blog once in a blue moon. This is because there are too much guest posts. Either you are using your time to study I understand but not too much guest post pls!

    Your UBT Design:
Your UBT is very nice and I even modified it on my blog. The main problem is you don’t have a magazine home page which can make your theme nicer. Besides, like other people said, your UBT is an exact replica of your blog theme which makes your blog not not so unique after UBT is launched.

    My 1st Impression:
Damn simple but way too SIMPLE!

    How you potray yourself:
My 1st impression of you is that you’re so cool when I visited your blog 1 year ago. I was then a noob in IM and think that you’re my teenage Bill Gates. After that, when I became a self proclaimed pro of making money online in my class, I even told the teacher about you in my oral test when I talked about blogging.

    Your Other Stuffs:
Make a change like your theme, a new Carl Ocab Dot Com, launch some fantastic products and so on……………

I hope I didn’t hurt you lol! Don’t leave my interview questions on a side because of these!

    Thanks!

Every body have their weakness not excluding you but that does not mean you are bad. The only thing i would say is that you guys should not make the word “Make Money Online” sound as if it is so easy.
