What Makes A Business?

By Carl On August 11, 2008 Under Featured, Marketing

This post is part of the “Joint Venture” series:

Part 1: What Makes A Business?
Part 2: This Could Be The Highest Paid Skill In The World
Part 3: Which Of These Joint Venture Strategies Have You Tried?

More to come!

Let me tell you a little story…

On a sunny Monday morning, a woman came out of her house seeing 3 old men with long white beards sitting in front of her yard.

She said “I don’t recognize any of you, but you sure look hungry. Please come inside and have something to eat.”

“Is the man of the house home?” The 3 old men asked.

“No, he’s out.” She replied.

“Then we cannot come in.” They said.

When the sun settled, her husband came home, she told him about the 3 old men. “Let them come in!” Her husband said.

The woman went out and invited the 3 old men. “We cannot go inside your house together.” One of the old men explained “His name is Wealth, he is Success and I am Friendship.” He then added “Now go back inside your house and discuss this with your husband who among us should go inside your home.”

With excitement, the woman flips the door open and told her husband about it “How nice!” Her husband said “If that’s the case, let’s invite Wealth so our home will be filled with Cash.” His wife disagreed “Babe, why not invite Success? So the two of us can finish our studies with doctorate degrees.”

Overhearing the conversation, their daughter butted in “Wouldn’t it be better to invite Friendship?” The couple gave their daughter a chance and agreed.

“Friendship, please come inside with us and be our guest.” Said the couple. Suddenly, the other 2 stood up and followed them.

Surprised, the woman asked “I only invited Friendship, why are you coming?” The 3 old men replied “If you had invited Wealth or Success, the other two of us would’ve stayed out. But since you invited Friendship, wherever he goes, we go with him.”

“Wherever friendship goes, wealth and success follows.”

And that what makes a business – friendship.

P.S. For the record, this post is actually for my oratorical speech in school. Now that’s what you call the best of both worlds! ;-)

A better reason for the old guys to come inside home was “we are the friends of friendship and since our relationship is too strong we will go with him”

Great ancecdote considering the terms Friendship, Wealth, and Success in their most general meanings.

Taking care of your relationships is truly the most consistent way to live a full life and run a lasting business.

What you say is so true, but just think if you want to start a company and you are new to a town and have no friends just how can wealth and success follow.
