Why McDonalds Is Smarter Than You Think

By Carl On May 1, 2009 Under Featured, Marketing

If you’ve been a long time subscriber to my blog or if you’ve been to seminars where I’ve spoken, you might have noticed that I always emphasize that I treat my blog as a business – not just a hobby or a get rich quick scheme.

Businesses have processes. If you did something out of order, these might mean thousands of dollars lost.

For example, have you ever been to McDonalds? (weird question, who haven’t?)

Do you remember the time when you ordered a Bigmac? Their next question would be…

“Would you like fries with that?” You say yes then…

“Would you like a large Coke?” You say yes then…

“Would you like to add 2 apple pies for just $1?” You’d think “Why not? I already spent $6 so $1 won’t hurt”

What you’ve done is order a complete meal but actually, you’ve gone through the whole process called “Upsell”

And this “process” is responsible for making McDonalds an extra $19 million dollar/day!

Now what would happen if…

You order a Bigmac then they ask…

“Would you like to add 2 apple pies for just $1?”

It doesn’t make sense because you want to have desert after your meal.

This also applies to internet marketing

Mike Filsaime made an extra $749,820 by adding one page to a product he sold for $97. He went from selling a $97 product to an $897 product.

But sometimes, when someone “upsells” us something we feel that the guy wants to make more money from us – that’s because they are not doing it right.

When McDonalds did it, we felt great. Why?

That’s what Anik Singal and Mike Filsaime discusses at Launch Tree.

They discuss it in a report and a fun (really) video – by the way, it’s all free, no catch.

But what if, I don’t have a product to sell – or haven’t started online yet?

As Anik puts it…

“If you haven’t started online yet – this is the perfect chance to eliminate all the bad beliefs you have.

Start the RIGHT WAY and start FAST”

Check it out (I vouch for it)

This is a very important part of internet marketing. Make sure to include “extra” items – the buyers will often purchase them.

    Thanks,

Great point about treating your blog as a business. That point cannot really be stressed enough.

If you truly want to be successful with your blog, or successful with making money online, you must treat it as a business. Also make sure to keep in fun or people may end up where they may be now – depressed and hating their job.

    Hey Carl,

Great informative post! However, I am wondering if you are going to make a Top list for people who use blogger? Since blogger doesn’t have all the options wordpress does.

    Have a great weekend!

Couldn’t agree more. This also goes for brick and mortar businesses that use internet marketing techniques to build their businesses. Even more so in my opinion.

Interesting and you are completely right Carl, the 2 for 1 always gets me everywhere, or buy one get one free. If Mike Filsaime did not flood me with tons of emails and I would probably buy his products, but it’s too much and it all gets lost.

McDonalds is above and beyond the “fast food” restaurant culture. They are right there next to Walmart in terms of globalization scalability. To own a McDonalds franchise you need to complete courses at the McDonalds College, which trains you to be a finance and business investor. Like said McDonalds is on a league of their own.

Thinking about McDonalds whenever I take an order from their counter and their cashier would ask if I would like to upgrade this meal to this and that, I realized that small things do matter. I mean $1 for apple pie? Come on? Isn’t that too cheap? But then lower price = greater demad.

I have to agree that this is also like Internet Marketing, however like what you said, ‘upselling’ the wrong way could cost you your customers.

    Great post Carl,

Mc D’s has been doing this forever. I think they originally started upselling when they offered the “Super Size” meal for just $0.49 or whatever it was. It really is smart because just like in any other marketing, if someone is satisfied that they already spent $50 or $97 then most often they will purchase an upsell or downsell.

    Thanks,
    Bryan

and all the buyers are actually running after the free or “extra items” buyers have this feeling that they got more from their money.

Don’t really like going to McDonald’s anymore. In N Out definitely doesn’t know how to up-sell. :) Looking forward to your future posts.

Lol, this only works for McDonalds if their employees actually care to ask or mention any of that :)

Funny, they don’t ask if you “Would you like a double by-pass for just $45,000 more?”
