Ouch! Hit me on the spot. Haha! But I do see your point. I will be focusing on my content and purchase my own domain so I can launch a fully functional blog. That hit me but it felt good. :)
Thanks Carl!

Just this afternoon, I was beside a new girl at our school lounge. She’s well groomed, tall, fair skinned and meh… cute. She seems to be waiting for someone. I was “thinking” of a way to open a conversation but I was blank at that moment :-P
I had spent a few minutes of my “thinking” when one of my friends passed by who luckily is a friend of the girl beside me! So yeah, he introduced me to her and then after a few minutes, left – leaving me and that girl talking.
What happened to the conversation ya say? G’dang! There was no connection at all. She doesn’t even know what’s happening in the school! No content. Hate to say it but – she was just another pretty face. Oh well…
One thing I noticed bout bloggers in their early stages is that they worry about their design too much (Ouch! Did I hit you on that one :-P). They spend countless hours working around their theme, counting every pixel, hitting the right hexadecimal code, plastering and arranging widgets, etc – that they lose time or if not, lose energy to create a good post.
Although yes making a “wow” first impression is important but when it gets to the point that you lose time on doin other important things, that’s where you’ve crossed the line. Think bout it, the delivery is more important than the first impression – you have this stunning design that gets people hooked for minutes but when they get to the content, they see nothing, they see fluff!
You don’t want that impression do ya? Of course not! So if you’re one of those guys who spend huge time on design, first thing you gotta do is… STOP, get a free theme or buy a premium one (Presentable is enough, it doesn’t have to perfect!) then crank up your content! Ignore the little things that you don’t like bout the template, concentrate on your content, on making money – after sometime, you’ll raise enough to get your own unique design. You won’t regret it!

Tough luck with the girl Carl, maybe next time! Great job though with using that story to make an analogy about new bloggers and a common mistake that many make!

Good Post Carl – I guess in his/her initial start-up a blogger concern too much about how his/her blog looks, instead concentrating writing some good posts he/she much care about blog design . (I have gone thru this) but thank god now am happy the way my blog looks. It’s been long since i made any change to my blog design (initially I keep on changing themes every month :-)

You l’il smoothie Carl…
Nice try..
Great wisdom here dude.. I really can never choose a design I like for my blogs.. so I just gave up and settled on a very plain one so I could focus on the word mastery ;-)
Peace

well, absolutely agree with it, most readers are here for informative content, who cares about designing, right? for an example, Google is so blank and clean, but everyone need them, see~

Rock on Aira!

Haha, maybe this can also be a personal lesson when choosing the right girl! I wonder what would happen if I start a personal advice blog? Nah! But damn she’s cute :-D
September 18, 2008
Yep, it’s a common mistake that even I, have experienced. Kudos on you gettin out of it mate ;-)

Here’s a good read related to that… http://www.carlocab.com/a-hardcore-advice-on-making-money-with-adsense/

I was just having a conversation with a friend about the need to launch quickly and adapt things according to what the market determines versus getting everything perfect, including blog theme design.
I certainly agree with your point. Once an acceptable design is ready, just launch. When the blog receives only a few readers, there are more content and promotion work to be done and worried about. And design is at the bottom of the list.

@bb community
No matter how informative their contents, if the design is not friendly. I wouldn’t try to read it. So pay some attention to the design and layout, after that. Focus on content, that’s what I feel.
@Carl
At least she has pretty face (at least). Because you try to hit on her,
that goes for blog too. When I see the thumbnail, and the design is appealing. I’ll visit it, but will leave if it doesn’t contain contents. (Just like the girl you mentioned), so get pretty face and then build your contents.
Those who doesn’t have pretty face are rarely get hit/click. ^^

I know what you mean carl. Content is still king! but then again if you have the content and a good design… double bonus points :D
September 19, 2008
Interesting piece of thought, Carl. I couldn’t agree more with it and yes, I was guilty of it in the beginning too and then I realized that I should have given the worry to a great theme designer so that I could focus on the task at hand – writing quality contents.
Anyway, if I were you, I would find my way to connect with her irregardless whether she knows anything about school. Fact is those who study too much is too boring outside the school..if you know what I mean…;-) Beside girl and blog are two different species….

Hehehe, dead on. That was, by far, my biggest mistake. I think I pretty much looked over tens of thousands of wordpress designs when I started my first project. :P
September 24, 2008
I thought you said the girl is new in the school so most likely she wouldn’t know what’s going on in the campus yet, right? Oh well..
The point about the content is good. In fact, sometimes I spent more time researching on how to build up my blog that I forget to write post for that day.
September 26, 2008
Well, that was a good metaphor, or analogy you used to make people understand that content is key when it comes to blogging. In fact, some of the most ugliest looking blogs are very popular like MediaTakeout.com The interface is whacked, but the content is delicious. Good post

Design is still very important though – It can be the difference between visitors going and visitors becoming loyal readers
October 5, 2008
Would it be asking too much if you have a pretty face to start with?
October 6, 2008
I can see your point Carl, but I also agree with Simon, I think some design is important and especially how it defines your navigation and optimizes your landing pages.
Thanks,
JR

The ratio of design and content should always be 1:1. Both is relative to each other. Because to be able to get visitor for a particular site your design must be catchy. Content on the other hand would make them come back to your site.

oh yeah, I’ve wasted many hours initially to search for a good template design and tweak it the way i like… or change it when someone comment on it …
in the end, i got fed up over the nuisance of fixing the template, I’ve just stick with one that is purely WHITE!
ha ha ~~
anyway, love your blog
October 9, 2008
Aww! that was a sharp hit you did! at this very moment before i stumbled here, i was getting frustrated trying to successfully tweak and hack codes on my blog. it’s good thing i read this post, and i have the reason to give up. :)
nice post carl, as usual.
October 13, 2008
Hey, You know what? You hit the right spot man. I spent 1 week so far getting my top header designed on photoshop and i still havent gotten it how i want it to be. I learned webdesign on my own here and there, Guess what im doing now? Got my logo, installing a forum, then i will start adding a lil bit of everything on there, my portfolio, games, videos, blog, who knows what else, i just want money, Thanx man. That was right spot right moment.
October 14, 2008
r u really 14? :) btw, nice post. for a moment i recall my memory when i was a teenager :) how i miss those times…..
October 18, 2008
Well, I probably spent too much time worrying about design when I first launched but if a blog is too ugly, it doesn’t matter how good the content is. Back to your analogy, a good personality is great but if the girl is ugly she wont get her foot in the door.
Ofcourse anyone who is using Wordpress has no excuse, with the thousands of themes out there that are easy to install and look fine, you can be up and running with a “pretty face” in barely any time at all.
October 28, 2008
Very Very true, too many users and owners only focus on there design and do not ever start creating or writing on there site until they have the perfect dream design
