Monetize Lost Visitors: Make Money With Your Error Pages

By Carl On September 29, 2007 7 Comments

I know you hate to see these:

Darn! I hate to See 404 Pages - Monetize Lost Visitors: Make Money With Your Error Pages

Why do browsers still call this as a 404 page?! Only geeks know what 404 page!

When you visit a site, and you have typed in the wrong folder of a domain, on most occasions 404 pages will show up. If that website haven’t customized it yet, the browser will automatically generate a 404 page like above.

Although it’s really handy to see some warnings like these, it doesn’t make you any money at all! All you have is a lost/unknown visitor that most likely won’t come back.

A lot of sites are talking about how to monetize your traffic, they mumble about ad placement, blah blah blah, but I’m pretty sure some forgot about the error pages! On my everyday surfing activity, I always land to 1 or 2 404 page everyday, that sadly has nothing in it.

Here’s a useful plugin that notifies you through email whenever a person visits a 404 page. Try it for yourself and you’ll see the potential, on the other hand you can just check your awstats in your cpanel and check how many people came by on your 404 page.

How Do You Set It Up?

If you’re on WordPress, professionally designed themes include a 404.php file. Just log-in in your admin panel, add some custom text in the 404 page template and you’re done.

If the theme you are currently on doesn’t have a 404.php file. You can create one and upload it where your current theme is located.

Add these common codes and save it as 404.php:

<?php header(”HTTP/1.1 404 Not Found”); ?>
<?php get_header(); ?>

<div class=”post”>
Custom text goes here
</div>

<?php get_sidebar(); ?>
<?php get_footer(); ?>

For some websites, you can add this one liner code to your .htaccess file:

ErrorDocument 404 http://www.example.com/404.html

If you like you can also add 401 (which will show up if a person visits an authorized page) and 403 (if a person visits a forbidden page) Just change the domain to where you want the visitor to be redirected if they have typed the wrong extension.

Monetization Ideas

After you have set up the error page, let’s now edit the files where your visitor will go. Here are some ideas to start off:

Affiliate Links

The easiest perhaps is this, just add the banners, links, etc… of the product you’re promoting and you’re all done.

Special Offer

If you have a product that you are promoting right now, you can sell it to them in a much lower price and make them think that it’s a big steal. You can also sell PLR (Private Label Prodcuts) products in alternative if you haven’t created your own product yet.

Capture Them!

As what I said before, capturing emails really matter. It’s a big benefit. You can read the 3 part series here:

Part 1: Why Capturing emails matter
Part 2: Give It Away And Get Rich
Part 3: The Power Of Words And Colors

CPC Ads

If you’re just really lazy to sign-up for an affiliate program, then this might be the last option for you, because I bet you have an AdSense account. Just plaster the page with ads! Though, I do not recommend doing this, you’ll get lower results.

Just for some inspiration, have a look at my own 404 page ;)

Link Building On The Million Dollar Wiki?

Link Building 101

Post sponsored by Rui of Link Building

Million Dollar Wiki created a big buzz in the blogosphere lately, if you haven’t heard of it already, well Million Dollar Wiki is a “Wikipedia clone (almost)” but the difference is, you own the page for life and you can do whatever you want with it! Maybe plaster it with AdSense ads or affiliate links rather which is more effective or maybe just a link to your website.

Bloggers like Shoemoney and John Chow blogged about it and even bought a page for themselves! Rui Augusto of tolnetwork just took advantage of that and bought a page too. It’s currently top 49 on over 980 pages sold and currently featured in the frontpage of the site. What could be better than that? Well it’s his page, Link Building.

Thousands of bloggers today are scourging for links in the belief that it’ll make their blog more popular or maybe rank higher on search engines. Although that’s not the topic for today, so let’s just skip that.

What You Can Find In The Page

The page is not that monstrous at all, word count is approximately 800+ words, though I bet his page will be a good help for those Bloggers who want to learn some more SEO related stuff, like the differences of one way links, reciprocal links and three way links.

What I like about the page are his link building tips that most people got caught on like the first one: “Look for relevancy and not only PageRank.” Which is the common mistake of many SEO wannabes out there, here’s a snip from the page:

  1. Look for relevancy and not only PageRank.
  2. Use the keywords you want to promote as the anchor text, but vary the anchor text across different websites.
  3. Use Deep Linking, don’t link always to the homepage of the website.
  4. Do not exchange/buy sitewide-links on unrelated websites.
  5. Get links from websites with different pageranks and importance.
  6. Try to get links on pages with few outbound links and that your link be placed near the top of the page. .
  7. Get links from different IP networks.
  8. If your links are not permanent, and you buy links, try to keep them long enough to see results.

How He Makes Money

Well based on what I said above, he did plaster the page with AdSense and even affiliate text links, which is actually a smart move. Imagine a sale on Aaron Wall’s SEO book, you’d get $40 commissions for that, even a publisher that gets paid on Text Link Ads, you get $25. Not a bad investment for a $100 page?

The Good and The Bad

The Good:

  • The actual content is good, can hit you right in the face on some points.
  • Affiliate links just at the end of the page was a smart move.
  • How he determined the difference of one way, reciprocal and three-way links

The Bad:

  • Lack of monetization, AdSense will certainly get low CTR in the header.
  • The logo is way to cut off and cannot be read.
  • 800+ is not that much, try adding more.

Conclusion

Getting a page on the million dollar wiki for $100 will be a good investment, especially because you’re not the one promoting the site itself. So it’s a risk, you may lose your $100 or not.

All in all the page was a good read. I suggest you read some of Rui’s tips just for sure you don’t do those mistakes again. Again visit Rui’s Link Building page in the Million Dollar Wiki.

Playing With People: How Powerful Words And Colors That They Influence You

The Power Of Words And Colors - Neuro-linguistic programming

This post is part of the “This Is Quick” case study:

Part 1: Why Capturing emails matter
Part 2: Give It Away And Get Rich
Part 3: The Power Of Words And Colors

More to come!

If you have noticed, I’m doing some changes in that big header up there. I’ve been changing some colors, write-ups, placement, etc. It’s not that it looks bad or something but I’m just into some tests.

You see I’ve read loads of articles, watched tons of videos about this NLP (Neuro-linguistic programming). NLP is about how language (linguistic) affects a person’s thinking (Neuro) using different massive techniques. You can check out my post about it, I left a video there from Derren Brown, a popular guy from London.

I got so curious about it that it made me look for more videos from that guy and wow, I was deeply amazed how he can change almost all people’s perspective and even their train stop.

Headlines Should “Suggest” Action And Time

“Buy one today, get it now, grab a copy today, etc.” You’ll see those on almost all stores worldwide, and it’s also here online. Check out my header for a quick example. No it hasn’t degraded even after all the years that marketers used it.

I got proof, on my first try, when I first added the big header, I used the headline “Your FREE Report”. It worked nicely at first but let’s not count it because there’s always big conversions at first launch. After a week, conversions just suck! I got like 10-15 names from a blog that gets 500-1000 unique visitors everyday. After that, I didn’t hesitate to change the headline and some texts and added the second one which is “Grab (Suggestion of action) Your FREE Copy Today (Suggestion of time). I’ve increased conversion rates to 15-20 (I’m pretty sure it didn’t go below the 15 line)

For a curious kid, that wasn’t enough, so yeah, I changed the headline again to “Make Money Online Now” My traffic was targeted for that because if you still don’t know, I’m on the frontpage of Google for the keyword “make money online”. That’s right! Conversions jumped!

Colors, Backgrounds and Fonts

Say The Colors Not That Words

If your headline is ready and you think it’s enough, try experimenting now on how they look. Colors, backgrounds and fonts have a major impact on the headline. Let’s just say that you have a great headline but it’s just too dark that people can’t see it. What happened? Well, unfortunately for you, nothing.

So try experimenting on these elements, make headlines stand-out with other fonts. Set mine again as an example. You’ll see that I’m using a red font color for the main headline and a black one on the not-so-important ones. I also used a white background to highlight the texts in the headline (That explains those irritating yellow highlights in salesletters!) Also, some drop shadow will help, just to pop it out a little.

Share Your Experiments

All of these are for experimental purposes only, it may or may not work well for you because we may have different audiences. So all of these results are just from experimenting but with a little science on the side.

Anyway, I know I’m not the only one who have been playing with people experimenting with headlines. What about you, do you have any experiences with these? mind sharing it?

“Give It Away and Get Rich” Yes, It Still Exists!

By Carl On September 24, 2007 8 Comments

This post is part of the “This Is Quick” case study:

Part 1: Why Capturing emails matter
Part 2: Give It Away And Get Rich
Part 3: The Power Of Words And Colors

More to come!

Before I begin this article, here’s something to look at:

free.jpg

Winzip, limewire, pdf reader, video converters and all other softwares all of them are free, but ever wonder why the dudes who made it gave it all away in exchange of nothing?!

No, their not dumb, actually they’re the smart guys. Just think about it again. If you downloaded adobe’s pdf reader will you be able to edit the pdf files? No. how? You buy the whole product.

The scheme is quite simple to understand. You give something away in EXCHANGE of what you need.

About That Picture

When I checked my stats in Text Link Ads this morning, that commission made me laugh, simply because I see how the “Give It Away and Get Rich” scheme works. I mean, if you look at the referral link, you’ll see that it came from the link of my free report (if you want to get it, use the form in the header. Obviously) and all I did was plug a little affiliate link there and poof.

$25 is chicken feed, I know. But think positive, there were only 500+ people who have signed-up in the newsletter and that’s just in 3 weeks of time, what more for next month?! When the report goes viral because of the master resell rights?

What Actually Do You Need In Exchange

If you have something that you want to give and you think people would love to get, what will you get from them in order to pull some cash giving away stuff?

  1. Personal information – Of course, name, address, telephone number, etc.
  2. E-mail address – The goldmine in the online world, see the first part for more explanation
  3. What they need – If you think you didn’t have that much success on your first giveaway, you may want to ask some of those who got the product for some suggestions and so on.

Building a Brand Through Giveaways

Not all people who give free stuff want money, some just want fame, popularity or most importantly branding. A great example of this is Mozilla. Mozilla has become an authority in giving away free stuff and trying to make them better and battling their way to fame against Microsoft, add to the fact that they are battling against the big daddy, they’re getting some star dust on their way through.

And oh, don’t forget lovely WordPress!

Grab A Copy Of The FREE Report

Ok, now to get things done. If you haven’t downloaded my report yet, I’m giving it away for FREE . Just fill up the form above with your name and email address (what I need) and I’ll send you the link instantly.

Oh yea, I almost forgot. You can make money with it, sell it, offer it as a giveaway or just share it with your friend (branding part) but take note, your limits are not to edit it (where I make money)

I hope I gave a good lesson today, tell me what you think and don’t forget to subscribe for you not to miss the next part of this post.

My Best Blog Tip EVER Series – Yaro Starak

My Best Blog Tip EVER Series - Yaro Starak

The last “best blog tip” by my friend Nate Whitehill was a big hit. I’m sure tons of people like it, in fact I love it!

For today, our special guest is a BIG daddy in the blogosphere who blogged for more than 2 years, a young entrepreneur and a friendly guy. Warmly welcome the second dude to give his best blog tip ever… Yaro Starak of Entrepreneur’s Journey!

His Best Blog Tip EVER:

Yaro StarakMy best blog tip ever is to have faith and be motivated by your end goal, but realize in order to get there you have to take a step each day.

Most bloggers fail before they reach success for no other reason than giving up too early. There is no more powerful blog-killing force than the blogger themselves giving up due to boredom, despair or lack of results early on.

Ask bloggers who make it big and they will tell you that they had to push through all the same feelings and just keep working.

Work consistently and persistently at a few key things and you will be rewarded – that’s not a maybe, that is a guarantee!

If you post articles and do a little marketing each day you will get there, but you have to be wary of your own emotions as they will do all kinds of things to convince you to give up.

Make The Next Episodes Better, Suggestion Box Is Open!

Ok, I’m just one kid so I guess my ideas aren’t enough for this series, but I have this “itchy” feeling inside that we can make this series better, more fun and more exiting. Now I’m asking for your help, drop your suggestions below thru a comment and I’ll have a look. I’ll joyfully (what a word!) appreciate it

Best ones gets some linklove ;)
